Outline

Our exciting and innovative data initiative focused on strengthening the collaboration of key data governance actors and stakeholders from different countries across Africa in order to build up the data sector. After engaging with African think tanks, research institutions, and policy/advocacy organizations, Niyel designed framework that consisted of a knowledge hub, opportunity fund, and collaborative event that brings together data governance actors and enables them to work together on policy issues, advocacy initiatives (within and across sectors/regions), and learn different ways to engage stakeholders in large and diverse playing fields.

Hewlett Foundation, Ford Foundation, Omidyar Network, IDRC, stakeholders from data governance organizations in Africa.

Impact

  • 69 organizations work together across skill sets (e.g. research and advocacy, research and litigation, etc) and interest areas (digital rights, data governance, tech policy, etc)
  • Funding secured for collaborative projects involving more than 10 organizations across languages and east, west and central africa.
  • Over 100 organizations working together to contribute to a data governance knowledge hub and attracting over 20,000 visitors within the first two months of launching.
